Mac as a Wi-Fi Modem

You only use one internet provider at home, with only one cable, without a wi-fi modem. You need to open Facebook on your Mac, your brother is excited to download some games for his new iPad, and your Mom needs to find some articles on her laptop. This is what I call “prospect to World War III”.

Well, it doesn’t have to be a chaos, actually. All you need is your Macbook as a media to share the internet connection with all the other gadgets. It’s really easy to do, too.

First, connect your Macbook with your modem and activate the internet connection, as usual. Then, on your Macbook, open System Preferences, and click Sharing. Put a tick in front of Internet Sharing. Check to make sure that the source of your internet connection (usually the name of your modem) is mentioned in Share your connection from (for example, Share your connection from: ZTEUSBModem), which actually works automatically. And in To computers using, put a tick in front of Airport (this is the part in Macbook or other gadgets that catches the wi-fi signal). When you’re sure you’ve done all the steps mentioned above, click the red cross button to close the System Preferences window.

Now, turn on your other gadget(s). This can be an iPod, an iPad, a non-Apple laptop, another Macbook, or even a smartphone with Wi-fi feature built in it. Open the network setting, and set it up so that your gadget catches the wi-fi signal from your internet-connected Macbook. On iPod/iPad, you do it by clicking Settings, then choose Wi-Fi, thenChoose a Network. Your Macbook’s name will appear as one of the available networks. Click on it, close the Settings feature, then go to your browser and start browsing.

One thing that you need to remember, now that you share the internet connection with another gadget or even more than two gadgets, of course the speed will be different, too. But as long as it can cover everybody’s need of the internet connection, surely it won’t be much of a problem. Enjoy sharing! ^_^
